The Wizard of Oz starring Judy Garland is still my favourite movie. Recently I learned about this 1910 silent short version. It is only 13 minutes long. I like the comedy aspect, especially from the actor playing the scarecrow.</div>

I've been watching reruns of the newer version of the television show The Outer Limits (1995 - 2002). I like how they use the same introduction as the original series (1963 - 1965). However, it contains the line "We control the horizontal and the vertical", which I'm fairly certain no one under the age of 50 would understand. I love this slide show of the original series episodes. You will spot some well-known actors.</div>

<a name='more'></a>Back in the day (I actually said that) we had to go to the TV set and manually change the channel, turn the fine tune dial, turn the horizontal and vertical buttons, and worst of all send Dad to the roof risking life and limb to fix the antenna!<br />
<br />
Up until last year, I watched an old TV that everyone hated me for keeping but I thought it was kind of cool. It is a color TV about 30 years old and has buttons to adjust color and brightness/contrast. It works with cable and a remote and the only thing failing on it is the color quality. I received a new flat screen TV for my birthday last year so I'm using the old one as a TV stand.<br />

If the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences were to create a category for too many adaptations of a single story the first one would have to go to Anna Karenina. According to Wikipedia there have been 3 stage adaptations, 13 big screen movies, 3 radio presentations, 5 television movies, 3 ballets, 2 theater musicals, and 10 operas. So was it really necessary to make the lucky 13th movie starring Keira Knightley? I'm thinking no.<br />

One day soon after she first learned to ride a two-wheel bicycle I heard her screaming from about a block away. I didn't know I could run that fast. When I got to her I found she had fallen off her bike and scraped her knee. The way she was carrying on you would have thought she had severed an artery! I was relieved she wasn't as badly injured as I imagined during the run over to her but I was also annoyed about being made to feel that frightened when it didn't line up with reality.</div>

I'm not afraid to admit it. There are some shows that I find far too stressful to wait and find out what happens next. One of these shows is The Bachelor. I couldn't go through this season worrying about Tiara. Weren't you just ready to scream at the TV? A check in with <a href="http://realitysteve.com/">Reality Steve</a> - the best Bachelor prognosticator - and my anxiety was relieved. I don't mind knowing who Sean chooses in the end. I can still enjoy watching how it unfolds.</div>

There is something about The Bangles song "Manic Monday" that just doesn't resonate with me. The title makes for a catchy alliteration but there is nothing "manic" about the lyrics or the melody.</div>

Most people are making better choices in their diet but the English have a saying <i>"a little of what you fancy does you good"</i>. In other words, everything in moderation. This brings me to what I like to call the "brown and white" food groups.</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMGCM7fpsZH7wqrOTDWPBjhcKrxZF2zLlQEREr7lssPEqSjzFaW3lh95BB2Mp3S0HtXLSc6XN2hsgCCNej7fZjvYcYiPis0eKf91Vdf2V7LCbkZEbcmGxnOkKVW7cWHm8pbNniS-J7gA/s1600/cooking+vintage+photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMGCM7fpsZH7wqrOTDWPBjhcKrxZF2zLlQEREr7lssPEqSjzFaW3lh95BB2Mp3S0HtXLSc6XN2hsgCCNej7fZjvYcYiPis0eKf91Vdf2V7LCbkZEbcmGxnOkKVW7cWHm8pbNniS-J7gA/s320/cooking+vintage+photo.jpg" width="250" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.thedailygreen.com/environmental-news/latest/2010-trends-47123001#slide-1">Photo Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The brown and white food groups include chocolate, gravy, ice cream, whip cream, mashed potatoes ... you get the idea. Using the British saying above, I feel comfortable working in foods from these groups into my diet. The secret is not to overindulge.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I rarely eat meat. Vegans call it "flesh". That makes it sound repulsive, which I think is the point. I don't like bread either. My diet is fairly healthy. My favourite lunch is salad, cottage cheese and Greek yogurt for desert. I take cream in my coffee and milk in my tea. If I'm craving something sweet I am more likely to go for yogurt or fruit but I cannot deny there are times I'll reach for a Hostess cupcake (they come under both brown and white).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Women are sometimes driven by hormones and where there are hormones there are cravings. Cravings can be a symptom of a hormone imbalance and your physician can help you with that. Young women have period or pregnancy cravings but I believe junk food's best friend is menopause. I have more cravings now than I ever did in my pregnancy years.<br />
<br />
If there is one emotion I hate it is guilt. Let's get rid of guilt. Repeat after me:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>A <u>little </u>of what I fancy - from the brown and white food groups - does me good!</i></div>
</div>

First of all, when did shopping for jeans become such an ordeal? I'm sure I've had easier times shopping for cars. You can't do this on your lunch anymore. Oh no. It is an all day trek from one end of the mall to the other and back again. <i>Skinny ... pegged ... skinny flair ... high rise ... </i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>classic rise ... low rise ... ultra low rise ...</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Ya. I was thinking blue. Maybe a bit faded but not too much" I will say to sales clerks - who look like they are too young to be unaccompanied by their parents. Their eyes glaze over and their smile quivers a bit. "I'll be right back" they announce. They don't come back.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The last time I shopped for jeans I went to every store in our small town mall and tried on many pairs of jeans. Having failed to make a purchase I was left with no choice but to go to a store I never shopped at. I've accompanied friends who shop there but I just don't like this particular store.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I found a couple of pairs I liked and the prices were reasonable so I headed to the change room to try them on. The attendant handed me a little thingy to indicate I had two items and sort of motioned "over there" in the direction of the change rooms. I decided to go in the first one that was empty, hung up my stuff, turned around to take off my pants and that's when I noticed something on the floor in the corner. When I realized what I was looking at I recoiled as far back as I could in the cramped space. I was looking at a pair of men's underwear that someone had soiled themselves in and left behind. They were full of excrement - #2 - poop - shit!!<br />
<br />
I went looking for the attendant and told her what I found. She returned a blank expression and asked "Did you just come from there?" Again with the gesturing in the direction of the change rooms. "Yes, but..." She cut me off "Those are the men's change rooms" Wait. What? Oops! But I needed her to focus on what I considered to be the more important issue. She began to scold me about going into the men's change room and this time I cut her off. "I'm sorry. I made a mistake but did you get the part where I said there are men's underwear full of poop in there?" She was still annoyed with me for going in the wrong room "Yes. I'll call someone to come and take care of it." Then she made sure I knew where to find the ladies' change room.<br />
<br />
Who puts men's and ladies' change rooms that close together in the same area? I assumed it was all ladies'. It was after all in the ladies' section of the store. I noticed later there was a teeny sign indicating the area to the right was "men's". More importantly, what kind of adult leaves something like that in a public place?<br />
<br />
Feeling somewhat like Moses coming down from the mountain, I made my way to the check out and purchased one of the pairs of jeans. Unlike Moses, my tablets had this commandment:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>"Thou shalt not shop at <u>that</u> store ever again".</i></div>

We have all experienced embarrassing moments in our lives. I'll venture a guess that a large number of women have accidentally tucked their skirt into the back of their pantyhose and strutted around unaware until someone told them. Everyone has walked around with toilet paper stuck to their shoe after leaving the ladies' room at least once in their lives. My embarrassing moment involves a pair of sunglasses.</div>
<br />

<br />
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
It happened when my oldest daughter was in preschool. I was dropping her off on a sunny fall morning. We had her enrolled in a Montessori school that was located on the second floor of an elementary school. On that day I needed to speak with her teacher before I left her there for the day. We made our way through the school and located her teacher. I didn't realize I was still wearing my sunglasses. I don't know why. I have never done that before. Her teacher and I had a little chat, I kissed my daughter good bye and made my way back through the school and then to the parking lot.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It wasn't until I checked the rear view mirror that I discovered that not only was I still wearing my sunglasses but one of the lenses had fallen out!! I had just had a chat with my daughter's teacher while wearing sunglasses with one lens missing! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I picked up my daughter at the end of the day I asked her how she was able to keep a straight face? She was being polite as it turned out, not knowing if I had some "special need". No special need here. Just plain silly. Care to share?<br />

With love from Canada!Clarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15007376566250636296noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7320430466117382982.post-73138806383633780992011-07-02T09:12:00.000-07:002011-07-02T11:07:36.220-07:00A Royal Canada Day CelebrationThe royal newlyweds, Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - aka - Will and Kate - chose Canada for their first official visit. They attended the Canada Day celebrations held in Ottawa yesterday and drew a record 300,000 people.<br />
<br />
I had to watch on TV as Ottawa is too much of a trek for me at the moment. I was very impressed with their energy, how very personable they are, and just how happy they are. It is so uncharacteristic for the London royals to be so casual - lots of smiling - Kate laughing at her husband's jokes made during his speech - clearly newlyweds in love.<br />
<br />
There were two very moving events for me. One was the stop to honour fallen soldiers, veterans, and those currently serving in Afghanistan. The other was a swearing in ceremony for new Canadians. The folks lucky enough to be there were greeted by the couple who shook their hand and congratulated them.<br />
<br />
Now I must talk about what Kate wore because I'm pretty sure there is a law that any writer reporting on this couple must talk about her outfits. Seriously though, the reason I was impressed with her outfit is that she went out of her way to honour Canada Day. In the picture you will see that she wore our red and white. The impressive piece is the fascinator. She had it specially made for the occasion with the red maple leaf embellishment on the top. She is also wearing a maple leaf brooch on her dress. And speaking of the dress, she had worn it before. I really admire her for that. Classy!<br />

The goal has been to get my hair light enough that I can grow out the white/grey without the unsightly horizontal strip of roots. This Saturday will be six weeks since the last hair colour! So far it is working well.<br />
<br />
Trying to embrace my inner geaser isn't easy when I see television commercials for home hair colour starring beautiful actresses who tell me "You're worth it". How can I dispute that? By saying "No. I'm not"? One even says she will never be old enough to go grey. Good for you! And by that I mean shut the hell up!<br />
<br />
Why is growing older made to seem like the worst thing that could happen? I have people tell me I don't look my age but what does my age "look like"? The first time someone told me "You look good for someone your age" I was torn between thanking them and kicking them in the chest. "And I can still lift my leg up pretty high" I would have said.<br />
<br />
I will admit that it is easy to talk tough now because the white/grey isn't really noticable yet. When it is more advanced, I hope I will not be seduced by hair colour commercials. I already decided I was not worth it and, gosh darn it, that is the way it will stay.Clarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15007376566250636296noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7320430466117382982.post-40461651376890087402011-06-29T05:35:00.000-07:002011-06-29T05:35:34.461-07:00Semi Wordless Wednesday<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">One of my favourite movies is Fritz Lang's 1927 masterpiece Metropolis.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

She was both a silent and talking film star. I discovered her quite by accident when I was googling something else. I chose Clara Bow for my profile picture because I just loved the pictures of her. You can see right away she is both feminine and strong and that comes across in her photos. It is also apparent that she loved the camera and the camera loved her. I always laugh when my dad pronounces fettucini as "footachini". <br />
<br />
I don't hear as well as I once did. It isn't that I don't hear the sounds. I just don't interpret them correctly sometimes. Not too long ago, I was listening to a Starbucks commercial and I heard them say their coffee was made with rabbit remains. What? It took a moment for me to realize they must have said aribica beans. My kids never miss an opportunity to bring this up in conversation. They think it is funny and it is.<br />
<br />
My personal favourite came from my own mother who will not admit she needs a hearing aid. At a family dinner, someone said something to her that she didn't quite catch. Wanting to clarify and speaking in an alarmed tone she asked "What?! There's a monkey in the fridge?!" Yes mother, there is a monkey in the fridge. Let me get it out for you.<br />
<br />
Like I said, source of amusement.<br />
